PURPOSE:To miniaturize a magnet and to enhance analytical efficiency by forming a discharge tube into a U-shape and placing the U-shape curved part in a magnetic field and taking out measuring light toward the outside of the curved part. CONSTITUTION:The main body of a discharge tube 1 has a U-shape and electrodes are inserted in both ends of the main body 1 and a protruding part 3 having an element unit to be quantified or halide 2 thereof sealed therein is provided to one branch of the U-shape tube. A magnetic field is allowed to act on the curved part of the discharge tube 1 and measuring light is taken out in the direction shown by an arrow. The discharge tube 1 is held by a plurality of lamp holders 4 and the holders 4 are slidable and a plurality of the discharge tubes can be successively taken in and out with respect to the magnetic tube of a magnet M by a drive mechanism H. The light L emitted from the discharge tube 1 is incident on a photodetector 8 through a polarizer 5, a sample atomizing part 6, an analyser 15 and a spectroscope 7. The output signal of the photodetector 8 is taken in a control apparatus 9 in synchronous relation to the change-over of the azimuth of the polarizer 5 to be subjected to signal processing and the concn. data of the element to be quantified is calculated to be displayed on a display device 14.
