PURPOSE:To rapidly and quantitatively separate carbohydrate and polyphenols, being the components of a lignocellulose-based material mentioned below without inactivation of the components at room temperatures by treating the lignocellulose-based material such as wood with a mixture of a concentrated acid and a phenol derivative. CONSTITUTION:A lignocellulose-based material such as wood, i.e. a complex of carbohydrate and polyphenols is treated with a mixture of a concentrated acid and a phenol derivative such as cresol to separate the components from the above-mentioned material. In addition, the above-mentioned treatment is recommendably carried out specifically by treating the lignocellulose-based material with cresol, sufficiently penetrating cresol into the inside of the above- mentioned material and then adding a concentrated acid thereto while vigorously stirring at room temperatures. After the treatment the reaction mixture is separated into a cresol layer and a water layer by stopping stirring and the polyphenols and carbohydrate are recovered respectively from the former and the latter.
