PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimedia encoding and encoding system which can handle various types of data arrayed in blocks of variable size. ;SOLUTION: Frames of image data, graphic data, and text data are supplied to a frame buffer 64. In response to an encoding command from a CPU 58, an MPEG(motion picture expert group) encoder 68 compresses the data from the frame buffer according to the MPEG compression algorithm and outputs data blocks of variable size corresponding to frame parts to be displayed to a texture buffer 70. An MPEG decoder 74 reads the data block of variable size out of the texture buffer, and expands and supplies them to a graphic engine 76 which operates various types of data, thereby generating video to be displayed on a video monitor.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
