PURPOSE:To obtain a light-weight ceramic building material colorable with a glaze and having low water absorbency and excellent sinterability, strength, etc., by using a raw material composed mainly of a dam-sedimentation soil rich in organic materials and Fe2O3 and free from plasticity, forming the raw material in dry state and calcining at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Dam-sedimentation soil used in the present process is composed of soil particles composed mainly of clay sedimented on the bottom of an artificial lake, rich in organic material and Fe2O3 and free from plasticity. The sedimentation soil is used as a main raw material, mixed, as necessary, with MIKAWA clay, feldspar, etc., and formed in dry state. The formed article is calcined at 1000-1250 deg.C to obtain the objective light-weight ceramic building material. The building material keeps sufficiently high strength even at thin wall-thickness and is especially suitable as a light-weight roof tile, flooring material, etc. The dam-sedimentation soil can be effectively utilized by the present process. The calcination can be carried out under either oxidizing or reducing condition and, accordingly, building materials having different colors can be produced by the proper selection of the calcination conditions.
