PURPOSE:To obtain easily the title polymer useful as a paper strengthening agent or a flocculant by reacting an acrylamide polymer with a hypohalite in an alkaline range. CONSTITUTION:An acrylic polymer (e.g. polyacrylamide) is reacted with desirably 0.05-2.0mol, per mol of the amide groups, of a hypohalite (e.g. NaOCI) at 50-110 deg.C for a short time in an alkaline conditions realized by the addition of desirably 0.05-4.0mol, per mol of the amide groups, of an alkaline substance (e.g. NaOH), and the reaction is terminated by desirably adding a reducing agent (e.g. Na2SO3) to the reaction system.
