PURPOSE: To determine the point in time when the data written to a tape must be rewritten by averaging the samples of electric signals having the size corresponding to the amplitude of changes in magnetic flux and by setting the limiting voltage at its specified percentage. CONSTITUTION: An interface 102 is controlled by a controller 112. Data is read by two read heads from a tape 118 to be amplified by an amplifier circuit 129 and sent to a medium defect detector circuit 130 through a single line 131, When receiving a signal from the controller 112 through a line 132, the detector circuit 130 calculates and sets the amplitude limit value. Namely when detecting a low readout signal amplitude, it outputs a LOW AMP signal to the controller 112 through a line 134. The controller 112 compares the input signals to select the limit which determines the point in time at which the data is to be written for each portion of the tape written with the data. Thus, it is determined whether rewrite is required or not.
