PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fluorescent substance, containing V in a specific amount based on a matrix of calcium tungstate therein and capable of exhibiting light emission with a high brightness and markedly reduced afterglow and providing highly sensitive intensifying screen. CONSTITUTION:The objective fluorescent substance is obtained by adding and mixing a vanadium compound such as ammonium metavanadate in an amount of 0.01-30ppm (preferably 0.1-10ppm) expressed in terms of V and CaCl2, etc., as a flux to a matrix of calcium tungstate CaWO4, then placing the resultant mixture in a heat-resistant container and burning the mixture at, e.g. 900 deg.C for 4hr.
