NEW MATERIAL:Optically active ester compounds of formula I (R1 is 3-20C alkyl; R2 is 1-20C alkyl group which may be substituted with halogen atom or 2-20C alkoxyalkyl group which may be substituted with halogen atom; X is -O-, -COO- or -OCO-; K is 0 or 1; m is 1 or 2; n is 1-6; * mark shows asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:(-)-4-Decyloxybenzoic acid 4-(3-propoxycarbonylbutyl)phenyl ester. USE:Useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material having a sufficient spontaneous polarization, capable of rapid response and showing a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase in a temperature range in the vicinity of the room temperatures. Useful as a liquid crystal composition and as a liquid crystal element using said composition. PREPARATION:An optically active phenol derivative of formula II is reacted with a carboxylic acid of formula III (R' is hydroxyl group or halogen atom) to obtain the objective compound of formula I.
