PURPOSE:To facilitate the separation of waste rushes from normal rushes by disposing selection lugs and air-blowing openings, the selection lugs being employed for applying a selection action on the portions of rushes ranging from the intermediate portions to the root portions thereof, the stem straws of the rushes being caught, and the air-blowing openings being placed on the upstream side of the selection route and employed for browing air on the selection route. CONSTITUTION:Rushes reached a reaping device are reaped and carried backwardly while the upper portions of the reaped rushes are nipped with an upper carrying device and the root portions of the rushes are also nipped with a root portion-raising and carrying device. When the stem straws of the reaped rushes are successively carried backwardly and the portions thereof ranging from the intermediate portions to the root portions reach the selection lug 1 of a selection device 9, the stem straws are subjected to a selection action along the selection route. The stem straws of the rushes are subjected to the selection action with the selection lug 1 traveling in the direction intersecting the carrying direction of the stem straws in a state that the tip portions of the stem straws are nipped with the upper carrying device, thereby selecting and removing short waste rushes. In the process, an air-blowing opening 10 placed on the upstream side of the selection device 9 blows air on the selection route to blow off the waste rushes, and the remained rushes are carried on the side of a taking roller 11.
