In the present invention, there is disclosed a process for producing a medical device comprising an elongate shaft, wherein the outer surface of the elongate shaft is coated with a stable hydrophilic coating for facilitating insertion of the elongate shaft into a body passageway, the method comprising the steps of:a) forming the elongate shaft from thermoplastic elastomer material being selected from the group consisting of a polyether block amide and a styrene block copolymer; and b) forming the hydrophilic coating on the elongate shaft by applying sequentially to the surface of the elongate shaft first a solution comprising between 0.05 to 40 percent(weight to volume) of an isocyanate compound and thereafter a solution containing between 0.5 and 50 percent (weight to volume) of polyvinylpyrrolidone and curing at an elevated temperature.
