Tool comprises ceramic matrix reinforced by 2-40 vol.% ceramic whiskers; specific compsns. are alumina matrices contg. 2-40 or about 25 vol.% SiC whisker. Pref. compsns. are 20-35 and 2-12 vol.% whiskers which are pref. Al2 O3, AlN, BeO, B4C, graphite or Si3N4 or esp. SiC or mixts. thereof. Al2O3 matrix can pref. include s mall amts. of ZrO2, Y2O3, HfO2, MgO, Si3N4 or TiC. Matrix can pref. be Si3N4. -
