The present invention relates to a process for reducing or completely stopping water production (encroachment) from a deposit in at least a part of a well, which traverses a deposit, for the recovery of oil and/or hydrocarbon gas, wherein an aqueous solution of a copolymer is introduced, starting from the well, into the part of the deposit in which the water production is to be reduced or stopped, and the well is then put into operation for the recovery of oil and/or hydrocarbon gas, the fluids present in the deposit coming into contact with the said part of the deposit containing the adsorbed copolymer, and the oil and/or hydrocarbon gas flowing through this part of the deposit and passing into the well, while the passage through the deposit is reduced, which process is characterised in that the aqueous solution contains a copolymer based on acrylamidoalkylenesulphonate, vinylacetamide and, if appropriate, further monomers.
