Operation of an FCC process is improved by using a novel reactor riser disengager configuration which results in catalyst being suspended in a disengagement zone in a riser section 29 proximate or above the riser cyclone inlets 34, as a consequence of vapors and catalyst leaving the riser through the cyclone inlets, to achieve a suspended catalyst density that is higher than the flowing catalyst density lower in the riser. The suspended catalyst provides a disengagement zone that enhances the separation of catalyst from product vapors. The riser 22,26,29 operates under conditions that prevent any substantial discharge of product vapour from its upper end 40. The arrangement also provides a convenient method for venting stripping vapors, introduced at 26, and leaving through reactor cyclone system 34,36,42,44. IMAGE
