Apparatus for removing SO2 from waste gas and producing ammonium sulphate solution comprises: (a) a scrubber (1) having a scrubbing zone (2), a distributor (3) above the zone (2) for feeding absorption fluid, and a gas permeable collector base (8) for fluid arranged below the scrubbing zone; (b) a device (4) for introducing ammonia water to the scrubbing zone (2); (c) an oxidising device (5) for oxidising ammonium sulphite and ammonium hydrogen sulphite to ammonium sulphate; (d) an absorption fluid cycle (9) which connects the collector base (8) to the device (5) and device (5) to the distributor (3); (e) a waste gas channel (6) for feeding the waste gas to the scrubber (1); (f) a sprayer (7) in the channel (6) for feeding a quenching fluid saturated with water vapour; and (g) a device (12) for recycling the fluid from the scrubber sump (11) to the sprayer (7). Ammonium sulphate from the oxidising device (5) is fed to the sump (11) via an injector (13). A waste pipe (14) is connected to the sump (11), from which an ammonium sulphate solution suitable for fertiliser production is withdrawn.
