PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A PYROGEN-FREE FRUCTAN WHICH IS READILY WATER-SOLUBLE AS WELL AS RENAL DIAGNOSTIC AGENT CONTAINING SUCH A FRUCTAN

A process is described for the production of a readilywater-soluble fructan as well as a well-tolerated renaldiagnostic agent containing such a fructan. In theprocess an aqueous fructan extract obtained from partsof plants is ultrafiltered over a first membrane whichretains carbohydrates and proteins with a highermolecular weight but which allows passage of fructan andthe filtrate obtained in this way is then filtered in asecond ultrafiltration through a membrane which retainsfructan but which allows passage of salts andlow-molecular substances such as monosaccharides andoligosaccharides. The fructan obtained in this way isused as a renal diagnostic agent together withphysiologically tolerated buffer substances at anosmolality which corresponds to that of blood and whichhas a pH of 5.0 to 7Ø
