A railroad freight car including a cargo wellfor carrying optionally either intermodal cargocontainers or highway semitrailers has a side sillstructure including a deep rectangular top chord and adepending web, supporting a well floor structure. Thewell floor structure includes reinforcing longitudinaland transverse channel members and horizontal top andbottom plates attached to the channels. Large circularopenings, aligned with one another, are defined in boththe top and bottom plates, and a peripheral ring ofvertical material interconnects the margins of the topand bottom plates around the openings. A reinforcingwalkway structure is located atop each side sill at eachend of the cargo well. In a multi-unit car adjacent carunits are supported on a single shared wheeled truck. Atrailer hitch is carried on a body bolster of one of theadjacent units to support the front end of trailer whosewheels rest on the floor of the cargo well of the otherof the adjacent units, so that a trailer otherwise toolong can be carried on the multi-unit car.
