A flow-through particulate incineration sys-tem is coupled to an aerodynamically regenerateddiesel engine exhaust gas particulate (soot, condensedpolynuclear aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons andash) trap (418). An incineration chamber (430) isprovided downstream of the particulates dislodgedfrom the particulate trap (418) during regenerationthereof by a pulse of compressed air. During regen-eration, a valve (434) between the particulate trap(418) and the incineration chamber (430) opens toallow the air and entrained particles to pass into theincineration chamber (430) to allow passage of theregeneration air therethrough, but prevent passage ofthe particulates, whereby the particulates are retainedin the incineration chamber (430). A heater (464) inthe incineration chamber is periodically activated tobum the particulates collected in the trap. The oxi-dation products may be exhausted to ambient or maybe returned to the engine intake (472) in an exhaustgas recirculation system.
