ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEM FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

An environmental control system for persons with disabilities who utilize electricallypowered wheelchairs that have an electrical control system that includes a directionalswitching mechanism to control the movement of the wheelchair. The environmentalcontrol system comprises a portable signal generator that includes a portable signaltransmitter and a control mechanism including a first receiver. The portable signalgenerator is capable of being integrated into the electrical control system of thewheelchair and utilizes the wheelchair directional switching mechanism to operate theportable signal transmitter. The portable signal transmitter generates user definedsignals corresponding to selective user-actuated movements of the wheelchairdirectional switching mechanism. The first receiver receives the user defined signalsgenerated by the portable signal transmitter. Upon receipt of the user defined signalsthe control mechanism operatively controls the function of an environmental systemsuch that the function of the environmental system may be remotely controlled fromthe wheelchair through selective operation of the wheelchair directional switchingmechanism.
