The invention is an optical glass amplifier (28) and an amplification opticalcommunication system, all based on a limited length of a single-mode glassfiber made from glass having phonon energy of less than about 350 cm-1 anddoped with dysprosium. The glass includes 0.1-30 mol % X, 0-40 mol % arsenic,0.01-20 mol % gallium, 0.01-20 mol % Y, and 0.001-2 weight % dysprosium,wherein X is selected from the group consisting of germanium and mixtures ofgermanium and up to 50 % of sulfur; and wherein Y is selected from the groupconsisting of selenium, indium and mixtures thereof. The system includes acoupler (16), a silica-based signal fiber (10) carrying the optical signalthat is to be amplifed in communication with said coupling means (16), a pumplight source (18) in communication with the coupler (16), an amplifier (28) incommunication with the coupler (16) at one end and another silica-based fiber(32) joined to the amplifier (28) at its other end.
