A construction for reducing the concentration of carbon monoxide in a hydrogen-rich gas fed as a fuel gas into a fuel cell, intended to meet the need thatthe selective oxidation of carbon monoxide for reducing the concentration ofcarbon monoxide should maintain a satisfactorily high level of activity in abroader temperature range. A selective CO oxidation section (34) for reducingthe concentration of carbon monoxide in a hydrogen-rich gas fed into a fuelcell (20) is provided with a catalyst for selectively oxidizing carbonmonoxide, comprising ruthenium as a main component and a second element, e.g.,lithium. This construction enables the activity of selective carbon monoxideoxidation to be maintained on a satisfactorily high level in a broadertemperature range in the selective CO oxidation section (34).
