An image enhancement and feature extraction system and apparatus use a measured property of an original image (60) to select a set of operations to be performed. In a preferred method, the set of image enhancement and feature extraction operations depends on characteristics of the image histogram (62). Furthermore, parametric values (62) used in image enhancement operations may be selected according to feature type and/or image histogram. In a preferred system, a table (64) that indicates image enhancement operations is indexed according to image histogram and feature of interest (67). The table (64) may also indicate values for parameters used in image enhancement (70) or extraction (71). Additional tables (66, 68) indexed according to feature type provide additional parametric values used in feature extraction (71).
