Inhibitors of microbial adherence or invasion as therapeutic agents and broad-spectrum enhancers of antibiotic therapy

The invention is directed to therapeutic use of compounds that function as inhibitors of microbial intracellular invasion of or adherence to host mammalian cells. Co-administration of the inhibitory compound with an antibiotic, such as penicillin, that inefficiently permeates mammalian cell membranes increases the efficacy of the antibiotic therapy.
