The pump fiber is stripped of the final part of its jacket. This operation can be carried out by etching off the coating. Preferably, the jacket is etched off in the form of a wedge. This enables the remaining pump output to be transferred to the surrounding area. The amount of vagrant pump light still flowing to the fiber output via the fiber core can be controlled along the entire length of the fiber whose protective coating has been fully removed.
