The invention relates to a rail wheel comprising a wheel body and an outer wheel part, for example a wheel rim (1), and to a method for producing the same. The hardness profile of the wheel rim bearing surface on a newly-manufactured wheel varies across the breadth of said bearing surface, with a minimum degree of hardness in the middle area. This variable hardness profile evens out during travel as the middle area is strain-hardened. As a result, the rail wheel is more resistant to wear.
