A device (10) for testing the reachability of users connected to a telecommunication network is described. Said device (10) comprises calling means (14, 16, 22) for automatically calling the users. A message for the user is subsequently automatically generated by message generating means (24), indicating that a reachability test is being carried out and containing instructions for generating a response signal by the user. Detection means (26) subsequently detect whether the response signal is generated. If this is the case, the tested user is reachable and the test is terminated. If the response signal is not generated, the test can be repeated. If the user is not reachable for a number of times in sequence, an alarm signal is generated.
