Lactate esters of formula BOOC-CHMe-OA (I) are new. A = an OH-protecting gp.; B = the residue of a cpd. B-OH and provides a detectable response when the ester is hydrolysed to generate B-OH, the response being chromogenic, fluorescent, a reflectance change, a pH change, chemiluminescent, colorimetric or spectrophotometric. Also claimed is a compsn. for determining the presence or concn. of leukocytes, esterases or proteases in a test sample, comprising a cpd. (I), a buffer, opt. an accelerator for increasing the hydrolysis rate of (I), and opt. a diazonium salt. Also claimed is a method for assaying a liq. sample for the presence or concn. of leukocytes, esterases or proteases, comprising contacting the sample with a compsn. as above, examining the compsn. for a detectable response, and correlating the response to the presence or concn. of leukocytes, esterases or proteases in the sample.
