The method relates to a transmission system with at least one electric motor (3) directly driving a drive wheel (2). Each motor is electrically connected (e.g. through a DC link circuit (6) to the generator (5) mechanically coupled to an internal combustion engine. The generator can also function as a motor. The driver controls the movement of the train through a control lever (7) directly coupled to the engine control system and/or a control system responding to the drivers command. Release of the lever, or a corresponding command to the control system, changes motor operation into generator operation. Driven by the drive wheels the motor then generates an initial power output which drives the engine. The method involves selecting this initial power output so that the engine is driven at a speed greater or equal to the no load speed and shutting off the fuel supply completely.
