Process for coating oxidic fibre materials with metal aluminates comprises: (a) wetting the fibre material with a sol derived from compounds of metals of group IIa, except Mg, group IIIa, except B, and/or group IIIb, IVb, Vb or VIb, except Y, including lanthanides, except Sm, and at least an Al compound; (b) separating the fibre material from the sol; (c) repeating steps (a) and (b); (d) drying the fibre material at temps. up to 400 degrees C and at pressures at most 5 mbar over the period of several hours; and (e) temp. treating the fibre material at more than 600 degrees C by inserting into the required matrix.
