A use of a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin for the production of a biomedical device for the absorption of bilirubin, bile acids and derivatives thereof from human blood or plasma. The resin has a macroreticular structure which makes it particularly suitable for the removal of bile acids and derivatives from the extrafiber space of an artificial liver system based on hollow-fiber bioreactors, in which the resin is integrated in the bioreactor or contained in a separate filter.
