To detect a congestion in an output port of an ATM commutator consisting of several connectors (1) interconnected by a cross-connector (3) the method consists in counting in each input connector (1) the number on inputting and outputting cells bound for a determined output port of a connector, in transferring the results of the counts supplied by the input connector to the output connector, to add up the results of the counts in the output connector and in declaring a congestion in the output port if the aggregate number of cells is higher than a determined threshold value. The invention is applicable to ATM networks.
