The mobile station generates a reference signal in response to the defined data. It has a radio antenna (1) connected to a frequency converter (2) producing two signals (I,Q) in quadrature which are fed to an analog converter (3) producing two further signals (I',Q') fed to a correlator (4). The outputs (Re(h(i))) and (Im(h(i))) from the correlator are fed to a final circuit (7). The final circuit (7) replaces a previously known type of circuit. It determines a complex magnitude based upon real and imaginary components of the signal generated by the correlation device (4). It may calculate the result using one of a number of given mathematical formulae.
