A method and apparatus for reducing harmful substances in combustion exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, in particular from an automobile, having an exhaust gas catalyst supplied with secondary air to the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine which is a function of the operating state of the internal combustion engine by a secondary air pump. The present invention is characterized in that, in the simplest possible technical form, harmful substances in the combustion exhaust gas are surely reduced by shortening the catalyst start-up time, and the oxygen (O ₂ ) content of the supplied secondary air is increased.
