The digital sound system for the motion picture film advances the digital time code 20 on the film 4 to trigger the transfer of sound data from the digital audio storage device 40 to the FIFO memory 42. Digital audio data is read out of the FIFO memory and played back in the theater at a constant rate. For any jump in the digital time code, a corresponding jump occurs in the digital audio storage but not in the FIFO memory. Read operations from the FIFO memory and the digital / analog converters (DAC _S : DAC 1-4) used for movie playback are synchronized to the AC main line 54 driving the theater imager, even when the time code entry on the film is extinguished.
