LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY CELL WITH CHIRAL FERROELECTRIC SMECTIC LIQUID CRYSTAL LAYER

The liquid-crystal display cell contains an oriented chiral ferroelectric smectic liquid-crystal layer comprising an achiral SC host mixture and one or more chiral dopes. The host mixture comprises at least two LC components, of which at least one has a tilted smectic phase (for example SC). The dopes, individually or together, induce a helix pitch p of 1 mu m. The total mixture has a polarisability P of 10 nC/cm2 and an SC tilt angle theta of 10 DEG . After activation in an electrical field at zero voltage and with crossed polarisers, dark parallel bars indicate the existence of an inhomogeneous structure. IMAGE
