A process for batch preheating, using off-gas from a fossil fuel fired glass melting furnace (3) operated with oxidation gas containing 30-100 vol.% oxygen, involves cooling the off-gas before entry into the batch preheater (1) by passage through a mixing space (quencher, 4) and feeding at least part of the off-gas from the preheater (1) through an off-gas line (5) to a chimney (6). The novelty is that part of the cooled off-gas is withdrawn from the off-gas line (5) and fed through a circuit line (7) to the mixing space (4) where it is mixed with the hot off-gas. Also claimed is equipment for carrying out the above batch preheating process.
