The method involves checking received digital signals for errors at the terminal. Test signals with a predetermined bit sequence and a predetermined time relation between the channels are transmitted in direction to the other terminal via the channels when the received digital signal is erroneous in a predetermined manner. The other terminal detects the transmitted test signals and the delay time between the test signals of the channels is measured. Delays are inserted according to the measured time delays into those channels having shorter delays with respect to the channel having the longest delay. When the transmitted test signals are detected test signals in the opposite transmission direction are sent.
