A press apparatus comprises a lower support (10) for a lower tool (12), an upper support (14) for an upper tool (16) and means for the vertical movement of the lower support, arranged to cause it to perform an intermittent movement in the course of which it is capable of assuming a high position (N1) in order to grip a material (18) between the lower and upper tools and a lower position (N2) in order to enable the material to be released; the apparatus including means (22,24) for guiding the vertical displacement of the lower support (10). The means for the vertical movement of the lower support comprises a fixed base (26) having at least one fixed cam surface (28), at least one operating rod (32) fitted at one end with a roller (34) (Fig.2, not shown) capable of interacting with the said cam surface (28) and connected at its other end to the lower support, a control rod (30), (Fig.2, not shown), pivotally connected at one end to the operating rod (32) the other end of control rod 30 being connected to driving means capable of causing the end to effect a movement in accordance with at least one portion of a substantially circular curve.
