A new unit decomposes pollutants in waste and exhaust gases from diverse combustion sources. The gases pass through a dielectric-limited silent discharge set up by two or more electrodes in a chamber (5). A novel feature of one electrode (6) is its gas-permeable porosity. Also claimed are methods: (a) treating poisonous pollutants in waste gases, where an alternating voltage (9) maintains the plasma, and the effluent gas enters or leaves through the porous electrode (6); and (b) decomposing pollutants including soot, in combustion waste gases passed through the chamber, filtering out soot particles at the porous electrode, to be reacted with oxygen.
