Process for the denitrification of water using anoxic denitrifying microorganisms whose carbon and hydrogen demand is satisfied by means of a donor in the form of a solid product that is practically insoluble in water is claimed. The water is led through an essentially vertical tube reactor (10) and at least partially recirculated inside this. The water flow within the reactor takes place via at least one essentially vertical flow channel and the microorganisms are grown on the surface of the solid carbon and hydrogen donor which is held in the areas over which the recirculating water flows.
