A directly-controlled hydraulic pressure limiting valve (10) has an oscillation-dampening closure (14) consisting of a hydraulic dampening piston (33). The piston (33), which is separate from the closure (14), is held firmly against the closure (14) by a spring (37). In the event of a rapid increase in pressure caused either by a shock loading or high oil viscosity in cold weather, the closure is opened more rapidly and undampened, preventing the generation of excessive peak forces.
