Horizontal wedge-type breech mechanism for heavy-calibre firearm

The mechanism (1) is externally driven, and incorporates a bottom piece (3) in which a locking wedge (5) is slid horizontally by an opening lever (17). The mechanism can be opened to either side as desired by sliding the wedge (5). Loading troughs (10,11) are provided at two opposite sides of the wedge. To determine the opening direction of the wedge, the hinge spindle (16) of the lever can be slid from a first to a second setting in the horizontal direction at right angles to the gun barrel axis (15).
