Preparation of a ballast or filler material (I), consisting of comminuted vegetable fibres, involves breaking up bamboo fibres into drop-like, spherical or oval particles formed from each fibre, the particles being an essential component of the fibres. Use of (I) is claimed in: (i) foodstuffs and/or dietetic products (specifically pastry, dressings, dough, muesli, chocolate bars, fruit bars or diet foods); (ii) cosmetics, for improving properties such as the lubricant action of the base combination of the particular cosmetic; and (iii) 'generic products' (not further defined). (I) is especially used to reduce the nutritional value of foodstuffs. Typically (I) can be used in bread, waffles, pasta, hard or soft cheese, yogurt, sauces, diet drinks, chewing gum, confectionery, chewing gum, tablets, ice cream, instant soups or spice mixtures.
