The respiration gas line (16,2,7) is supplied with oxygen by chlorate cartridges (21,22) incorporating ignition devices (23,24) with oxygen stored in a reservoir (19) and a pressure sensor (20). The sensor signals to a controller (25) on registering a low pressure, igniting another cartridge automatically. First and second control valves (17,18), situated between oxygen source and respiration line, have oxygen and ambient dilution air flowing. A sensor (9) measures delivered oxygen concentration, while a second controller (30) connected to this sensor and the control valves, maintains the required oxygen concentration for respiration. A xenon gas source (26) is connected to the gas supply line. The respiration circuit (6) includes a respiration gas line, with anesthetic gas supply unit (10) and anesthetic gas vent valve (15) connected to the second controller along with a carbon dioxide absorber (11). An activated carbon filter (12) with bypass line (14) and valve (13), enable respiration gas to be switched over to the filter. A unit determines anesthetic gas concentration, carbon dioxide concentration and respiratory passage pressure, integrated with a measurement device (9). Chlorate cartridges are filled with differing chemicals (to vary supply composition).
