Method for preliminary reduction of iron ore with coal in a coke furnace

A mixture of coal, fine iron ore and additional materials is introduced into a coke oven where the chamber width is less than 300 mm. The mixture is heated up to at least 1100 deg C in an air free atmosphere and is fed into an intermediate hopper or directly into a converter type vessel into which air is blown from below. Alternatively the mixture is fed directly into an electric arc furnace.
