A sensor (2) in the cylinder wall (4) measures the temperature of the passing material and an additional sensor (9) records pressure changes. Both signals are fed to an analyzing unit which compensates for the influence of the compression heating arising from pressure variation. An artificially created pressure change may be used in addition to the normal process pressure change to determine the level of compression heating.
