A transition unit (IWU) integrated in a narrowband switching node (SVK1) is provided to split a trunk group of narrowband useful channels (SN) for the transmission of useful information to other target narrowband communication devices (SVK2, SVK3) connected to the broadband network (ATM) into target-specific partial trunk groups. By directly accessing the signaling information in the node, the integrated transition unit (IWU) can easily allocate its target-specific segments to the partial trunk groups and convert them into narrowband signaling channels which are respectively included in the partial trunk groups.
