Quantitative determination of volatile organic carbon compounds (VOC) and optionally volatile nitrogen compounds in water is carried out after alkali addition to a test quantity of the water. Quantitative determination of VOC in water is carried out by subjecting a test quantity of water to alkali addition to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon compounds combined with the water, separating the VOC content in gaseous form, oxidizing the VOC to CO2 by heating in oxygen and measuring the resulting CO2 quantity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) quantitative determination of volatile nitrogen compounds in water by alkali addition to expel the volatile nitrogen compounds in gaseous form, burning the gas in oxygen and measuring the resulting NO quantity; and (ii) apparatus for carrying out the above processes, comprising a dosing pump (1) for withdrawing a predetermined test quantity from a water flow, a device (5) for adding alkali, a stripper (7a, b) for removing a gas stream from the water, a reactor (21) for heating and oxidizing the gas stream and an analyzer (26) for quantitative determination of the CO2 and optionally NO content in the oxidized gas stream.
