Component regions close to the coating have an increased amount of nitrogen. The coating has CrN and/or a substance similar to CrN. The coating thickness is less than 10 mu m. In particular, it is less than 3 mu m. The method includes the following process steps: a) a chromium layer is galvanically applied to the component; b) the chromed component is plasma nitrided at temperatures lower than 550 deg C, with an electrical potential applied to the component; c) as a result, chromium of the layer is converted into CrN or a substance similar to CrN; d) during plasma nitriding nitrogen is transported, in particular, by diffusion into the surface of the casting.
