Adsorbent for radio nuclides and heavy metals is based on finely fibrous material containing chitin, obtained from natural or cultured fungi (higher Basidiomycetes). Independent claims are included for: (a) the production of a chitin adsorbent containing copper ferrocyanide microcrystals; and (b) a method of purifying radioactive waste.
