A microsensor (18) makes a physical measurement near the sample surface (12) dipping into an adjacent phase. Sample and sensor are moved (14) relatively in three dimensions by a positioner. A boroscope (20) images variations at the measurement point. A computer controls relative positions of microsensor and boroscope imaging objective, relative to the sample surface. Microsensor measurement data is recorded against co-ordinates of position.
